Jaxson Stauber's Chance May Be Now

When the Chicago Blackhawks inked free agent Jaxson Stauber two seasons ago, it was not at all like when the hawks signed Marc-Andre Fleury just three summers ago. Not much interest was panned towards Stauber, the 24 year old Minnesota Native, unlike there was for Fleury. Blackhawks fans have been spoiled when it comes to goaltending. Two-time Cup Champion Corey Crawford tended the Blackhawks net not so long ago. After Crawford, it was three-time Cup Champion Marc-Andre Fleury who we saw it net. There will come a time when Mrazek leaves us; and hopefully one not too soon when we get to say goodbye to Soderblom. Could it end up being, Stauber?

Stauber currently has a .890 SV% and a 3.41 GAA in 13 games with the Icehogs this season, which may not be the greatest. However with a struggling team in front of him, it's easy to shoot down his numbers when, you shouldn't. On February 10th, 2023 Jaxson made rare history, becoming the first goalie in Blackhawks history, to win his first three NHL starts. Jaxson ended his two stints on the Blackhawks last season with a .911 SV, and a 2.81 GAA in 6 games with an impressive 5-1 record. With the Icehogs, a less impressive .894 SV, and a 3.32 GAA in 17 games. However he has picked up his pace as of late. With a .902 SV% on a struggling Icehogs team, it's a big improvement. Furthermore, Stauber has allowed 3 goals or less in 5 of his last 6 starts.

With Arvid Soderblom's horrific .880 SV, and 3.90 GAA in 33 NHL games and record that makes many ask, why in the world is he in the NHL? 4-23-3 in 33 games is terrible. To the point where, why not give Stauber a chance? This season for the Blackhawks is all about development, not winning the Stanley Cup. Especially after last Saturday's game, was that the breaking point? If the Blackhawks were smart, they would give Jaxson a chance similar to Soderblom. An underdog story never hurts.

In the meantime, Stauber and Commesso alternate games with the Icehogs. Jaxson will be prepared. If it gets to a breaking point with Soderblom, or just injury luck (how he got a chance last season anyway), it will be Stauber wearing a hogs jersey until then. But if there is one thing Stauber learned last season with the hawks, it's to always be ready for the call. It just may happen when we least expect it, again.

For Icehogs Network, I'm Anthony Pellegrino. The Hogs are back at it Wednesday vs Grand Rapids. We'll have our Gameday Preview posted at 8:30 AM CDT. Puck drop is at 7:00 PM.
