Weeks Returns to Hogs on 2-Year Deal

Updated: Aug 3

The Icehogs on Monday announced they’ve agreed to a 2 year AHL contract with goaltender Mitchell Weeks. Weeks, 23, has spent the last two seasons as Rockfords 3rd string goaltender, bouncing back and forth between Indy and Rockford.

In Rockford, Weeks boasts a 2.72 GAA and a .902 SV % through two AHL seasons. He’s served as valuable depth amid the past two seasons for Rockford, filling in for injuries to the likes of Drew Commesso, Dylan Wells and Jaxson Stauber. As well as call-ups for Arvid Soderblom. In December/January of last season, Weeks held down the fort for a three game stretch in which he went 3-0-0 with his first career AHL shutout on January 12th.

Analyzing the signing from the Icehogs perspective, it’s a surprisingly good move having Weeks return as the potential number 3. Weeks has shown to be a sure-fire reliable back-up goalie at the AHL level, giving the Icehogs potentially the best 3rd-string goaltender in the AHL. With the Blackhawks signing of Laurent Brossoit to compete with Petr Mrazek, Arvid Soderblom is expected to return to Rockford for next season barring a late off-season trade. On top of that, the Blackhawks are hoping to see prospect Drew Commesso take the next steps in his development via a second full-season in Rockford and he could look to make a late-season NHL debut. Add the potential for injuries to any of the 4 goaltenders in Rockford and Chicago and we could see Mitchell Weeks continue to show his value as a top-tier 3rd string goaltender.
