UMass Lowell Turn To Veteran Henry Welsh in Goal for Final Season

Updated: Sep 30

The Senior Goaltender announced months ago he would be back for a fifth season. Giving him what he thinks is necessary to make the jump to the NHL. We break it down below.

Last season it was rather easy for 13-year Head Coach Norm Bazin to turn his head to goaltender Henry Welsch in goal. 56 times over the course of the past four seasons has that happened. For the fifth and final season, Bazin will do the same. Months ago it was announced that Welsh would indeed be returning to the Riverhawks blue paint.

Welsch, 23, spent two seasons in the NAHL, putting up amazing numbers for a junior hockey goaltender. In 34 Games Played, Welsch put up a .927 SV% and 1.96 GAA. Additionally, his record was 23-6-4.

Moving up the pipeline isn't always easy for college hockey goaltenders. However, the transition for Welsch was virtually seamless. Putting up a .899 SV% in his Freshman season. Now, he's coming off a .907 SV% in his senior year. His fifth season will be one to watch for as his main goal is to move on, from college hockey to the NHL.
