BRIDGEWATER--On November 1st 2024, an attendance of 154 came to the Bridgewater Ice Arena to see the Stonehill Skyhawks (2-5) take on the St. Lawrence Saints (4-4) in a nonconference matchup. The starting goalies were, for Stonehill Connor Androlewicz and for St. Lawrence it was Dominic Basse who is a Chicago Blackhawks draft pick. Androlewicz appearing in his 5th game of this year, has posted a 3.22 GAA and a .904% SVG over those five games and for St. Lawrence, this was Basse's first start of the season.
The game opened up with Stonehill's Zach Nicolas scoring 13 seconds into the game to take an early lead of 1-0 Stonehill. This was Nicolas's second goal of the season it was assisted by Cole Melady and Joseph Grianda.
At the end of the first, the Skyhawks shut down and outplayed the Saints. The Saints forechecked hard, broke up a ton of plays, and made a ton of plays but couldn't put one into the net. They also only took one penalty which was #11 Will Arquiett for hooking but Stonehill wasn't able to capitalize on the power play. Stonehill outshot St. Lawrence 14 to 6 at the end of the first.
At the start of the 2nd, the Skyhawks still lead 1-0 over the Saints. St. Lawrence got an early power play opportunity 5 minutes into the period as Stonehill's Dominick Campione got called for a hitting-from-behind penalty. But St. Lawrence was shut down by Stonehill's penalty kill unit. 3 minutes after the penalty was over Stonehill's Dominick Campione scored on a great net front drive to make it 2-0, it was assisted by Zach Nicolas and Joseph Grainda.
At the end of the 2nd Stonehill was still out playing St. Lawrence on all aspects of the game. The end of the period shots were Stonehill 14 and St. Lawrence 11. Stonehill had a power play opportunity in the late minutes of the 2nd that will last till the start of the 3rd but they weren't able to connect on anything during the 2nd period on the power play. The game was starting to feel like Stonehill would win from my perspective they were in control of the whole game and it felt like St. Lawrence was behind them the entire game.
At the start of the 3rd Stonehill was in charge with a 2-goal lead and with 1:49 left in their power play, but they weren't able to do anything on it. At 6:22 in the 3rd Stonehill's Jake Cady was called for a tripping minor and it looked like St. Lawrence was gonna find the back of the net, but no they were unable to score with Connor Androlewicz making some great saves to lock the Saints down and as well as Stonehill's Cam Mannion making a ton of blocks in the defensive zone.
The Saints pulled their goalie with 3:35 left in the 3rd and Stonehill's Anthony Galante scored to put Stonehill up 3-0, that goal was assisted by Cameron Gaudette. Right after Stonehill scored St. Lawrence pulled their goalie again to try and score a goal but they were unable to. 1:50 after the other empty net goal Stonehill scored again to top off the game with a score of 4-0, that goal was scored by Charles Banquier and it was unassisted.
At the end of regulation, the score was 4-0 with Stonehill getting their 3rd win of the season which is a huge improvement from last year with them finishing (2-34-0). Stonehill outshot St. Lawrence 41 to 24. This win also marked Stonehill's first NCAA D1 shutout in program history. Key players from the game were Stonehill's goalie #29 Connor Androlewicz who stopped 24/24 for his first career college shutout and Stonehill's #24 Anthony Galante who had 1 goal and led the team in shots with 8. From St. Lawrence, their key players were #31 Dominic Basse who made 37 saves and put up a 2.07 GAA and a .949% SVG during the game, also from St. Lawrence #10 Thomáš Mazura who led the Saints with shots, He is an Edmonton Oilers draft pick.
This game showed how Stonehill is improving as a brand new D1 program and they could be a sneaky threat this year in the NCAA. As for St. Lawrence, they have been very inconsistent to start this year.
