PROVIDENCE--On November 16, 2024, the Brown University Bears (0-3-0, 0-3-0 ECAC) hosted the Princeton University Tigers (1-2-0, 1-2-0 ECAC) in an Ivy League and ECAC conference matchup at the Meehan Auditorium. The Bears who came off a 2-3 loss against Quinnipiac the night before, are still searching for their first win of the season. On the other hand, Princeton is coming off a 4-1 victory over Yale the night before for their first win of the season.

The starting lineups for this match-up were, for the Tigers, on left-wing #7 Kai Daniells and in the middle #16 Brendan Gorman, and on the right #24 David Jacobs, for the defense it was, #6 Ian Devlin on the left and the right #11 Jayden Sison, in net for them was #31 Ethan Pearson. For the Bears their lineup was, #11 Tyler Kopff on the left wing and #12 Max Scott in the middle, and on the right #24 Brendan Clark, for defense it was, #23 Ethan Mistry on the left and Alex Pineau on the right. In between the pipes for the bears was #1 Lawton Zacher.

For the first period, the game felt very even as both teams came out flying. The physicality played a huge role in the first period. Brown had a lot of early chances to get on the board. Such as getting a Power Play with 9:03 into the first, but they could not capitalize on it as Princeton’s penalty kill unit locked them down and their goalie as well. But it wouldn’t be the Bears to break the tie as Brown’s Tyler Kopff was called for a boarding penalty with 12:42 into the first. But with 1:46 left in the penalty Princeton’s David Ma took a shot from the high slot and it ended up going past Lawton Zacher to make it 1-0 Princeton. The rest of the period remains physical for both teams, with also Brown creating a couple of big chances but being unable to capitalize on them. A massive scrum closed out the first period. Princeton was outshooting Brown 11 to 7 after the first.

Right off the faceoff for the start of the 2nd, Princeton was able to get a bunch of quick chances but nothing happened. But with 2:39 into the 2nd Brown’s Lynden Grandberg and Princeton’s Brendan Wang were both called for roughing. With 5 seconds into the 4on4 Brown’s Max Scott scored right off the faceoff in Princeton’s zone to make it tied 1-1. After the goal, 14 seconds later Princeton’s David Ma was called for hooking. Princeton’s penalty kill, including key shot blocks, stifled Brown’s chances despite several strong opportunities. Brown was penalized at 2:43, but their goalie and PK unit shut down Princeton’s power play. The physical play continued, with both teams refusing to back down. Brown outshot Princeton 16 to 6.

The third period saw Brown come out strong but less physical, while Princeton remained aggressive. Both teams had chances, with Princeton's breakaways being stopped by Brown's goalie and with brown’s defense clearing the rebounds Princeton was unable to create anything. Penalties at 13:34 were assessed to Brown’s Leo Schwartz and Princeton’s Jaxson Ezman both for roughing. The physicality picked back up toward the end. In overtime, Princeton dominated possession and created several scoring chances, but Brown’s goalie made key saves. The game ended in a 1-1 tie after an intense, hard-hitting battle.

In the shootout, Princeton's Ian Devlin was denied, while Brown's Tyler Kopff scored. Princeton’s Brendan Gorman was also stopped, and Brown's Max Scott sealed the win with a goal. Brown won the shootout 2-0. Brown earned their first win of the season with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Princeton. The Bears will look to build on this momentum as they continue their ECAC and Non-Conference schedule.
