PROVIDENCE-- On October 18, 2024, the No. 14 Providence College men's ice hockey team celebrated their first victory and home victory of the season with a solid 4-1 win against Arizona State at Schneider Arena with an attendance of 3,030. A standout moment came from Tanner Adams, who achieved his first career hat trick in this exciting game.
Before the game, Arizona State had a record of 1-3-1, while Providence was at 1-1-0. The Friars kicked off the scoring just over three minutes into the first period. Hudson Malinoski retrieved the puck and made a great pass to Adams, who scored from the slot, marking his first goal of the season.
Later in the first period, at 13:02, Adams struck again. He sent the puck into open ice and took a well-placed shot, netting his second goal. Assists went to Nick Poisson and Taige Harding on that play.
In the second period, Austen May found Logan Will, who scored his first goal as a Friar, increasing Providence's lead to 3-0. Arizona State managed to score early in the third period when Ryan Kirwan netted a rebound, bringing the score to 3-1.
With just over a minute remaining, Adams completed his hat trick by scoring into an empty net, assisted by Chase Yoder and Poisson. This made him the first Friar to achieve a hat trick since Riley Duran in November 2022.
Providence’s goalie, Philip Svedebäck, was outstanding, saving 27 of 28 shots and achieving a .964 save percentage. Although the Friars were slightly outshot by Arizona State, 28-27, eight players recorded points in the game. Adams led with three goals, while Poisson contributed with two assists.
This game was also significant as it marked Providence's fourth consecutive win in their home opener since 2021, and freshman Will Elger got his first point with an assist.
With this victory, Providence improved their all-time record against Arizona State to 3-1-0. This win will set a positive tone for the rest of the season, and the Friars are eager to build on their success as they continue their journey in college hockey.
